Capturing a Kid's Perspective through Digital Scrapbooking

Posted on September 28, 2011

Record your children's perspective by scrapbooking their own words.

Pattern: Super Star
Kit: Dreamin’

It's true what Art Linkletter said: "Kids say the darndest things!" A kid's perspective is so fresh, honest, and innocent. And if you've got little kidlins, it's a wonderful idea to capture that candid perspective in scrapbook pages before it fades into teenage-hood.

The layout above records a sweet conversation between two friends:

Abby: Let's play "best friends."
Emma: How do we play that?
Abby: We pretend that we are best friends.
Emma: But we are best friends!
Abby: I know we are in real life, but this is pretend life. Come on, let's go outside and jump rope.

These tender moments are fleeting, but by capturing them in a scrapbook layout, we're able to keep them forever. (And pull them out during life's difficult times to remember how innocent and sweet our children once were!)

Here are some ideas for creating a layout to preserve your child's unique outlook:

  • Have a notebook handy to write down the funny or unusual things your kids say right away. You'll use their exact quotes for journaling on your layouts.
  • Grab your camera, kneel down, and take some pictures of your child or of things that illustrate their cute comments. Be sure the photos are at their eye-level.
  • Sometimes kids create the darndest things. Scan pictures or Mother's Day cards they've made, report cards, or certificates they've received to include in your digital scrapbook layouts.
  • Take photos of their favorite things, again at their eye-level: stuffed animals stacked in the bedroom corner, sports equipment on the floor of their closet, their favorite blankie on their bed, etc. These will be fun memories for you and them when they're older and the special items have long-since disappeared.

So, grab a notebook and your camera and get ready to fashion a layout from your kids' perspective!

Host a Studio J Laptop Crop!

Posted on September 27, 2011

Join with friends to preserve memories and create scrapbook layouts at a Studio J laptop crop!

Transform your Studio J® online scrapbooking sessions from solitary and silent to laughter-filled and super-social by hosting a laptop crop with fellow Studio J scrapbookers! Laptop crops, or digital crops, are usually a lot like traditional cut-and-paste paper crops—games, door prizes, music, contests—with a few differences.

First, you'll need a location with wireless Internet and plenty of electrical outlets. Have lots of extension cords and power strips on hand. Plan for two to three feet of space per scrapbooker—yes, quite a bit less than classic crops! Keep refreshments "safe" for computers and keyboards, in other words, no mess or crumbs; try popcorn, coated or wrapped candy, and covered beverages. Be sure to display your favorite Studio J layouts to inspire all your friends (and soak in all the compliments!). Grab your computer, step out of the home office, and take your Studio J creative sessions from tranquil to exciting with a laptop crop!

S is for Splash, Slip’n’Slide, Summer, and Scrapbook

Posted on September 21, 2011

I don’t know about the weather where you are, but around here it’s starting to get chilly. Sure, the sun is still shining, and the knobby-kneed kids climbing onto the school bus are still bravely wearing shorts, but there is a chill in the air that definitely says autumn is coming.

Noooooo!!!!!!!

It’s not that autumn is a bad thing. We get beautiful fall leaves, new school clothes (at least, the kids do), spooky Halloween decorations, and a wide variety of pumpkin-spice-flavored desserts. I love autumn. But I’m not ready to relinquish summer—not quite yet. So, like those shivering kids wearing shorts, I’ll cling to the coconut scent of sunscreen and the sweet syrupy flavor of snow cones, at least for a few more weeks.

In honor of summer memories, I’d like to share this bright and sunshiny layout by Nona Davenport. And even if it’s a little too chilly to pull out my own Slip’n’Slide, at least I can live vicariously through Nona’s scrapbook pages.

Archiving Photos: Paper or Digital?

Posted on July 19, 2011

Science tells us that images on paper have more emotional impact than those shown onscreen.

What’s the best way to archive your photos: paper or digital?

If you’re like most of us, you have shoeboxes overflowing with printed photos in addition to computer folders stuffed with digital pics. Granted, not every last photo of the local zoo’s giraffe will hold lasting meaning for your progeny—but hidden inside those shoeboxes and folders are some gems packed with memories you want to hold onto forever. So what’s the best way to keep those memories: digital or paper?

The truth is, shoeboxes and overcrowded computer folders (surprise!) are not the best way to preserve your cherished memories. Albums are. Let’s say you’re visiting Aunt Ruth’s house. Are you going to start up her ancient PC and go to the My Pictures folder? Are you going to pull the photo box from underneath the dry-cleaning receipts and recipes for canned rhubarb? Or are you going to pick up the album on the coffee table and start leafing through it? Yeah. We thought so.

It’s not just a matter of personal taste, though. Studies have shown that printed material leaves a deeper emotional impact on the brain than images onscreen. Turns out, if you want someone to remember your image, you’ll have better luck if it’s in printed form. And a printed photo is often only a clue to the story; it only becomes powerful when it’s paired with words, as in a scrapbook page.

Still, digital has its advantages. Digital photos are easy to back up online, making them safe from fire or flood. And digital photos are easy to share, whether through email, blog, or social media sites.

Because we recognize the importance of archiving your memories in albums, we produce beautiful 12" x 12" custom prints of your Studio J® layouts. When you pair your digital photos with the stories behind them, then print them and place them in your albums, you’ve created a keepsake to be treasured for generations.

And if you want to share those memories right now, just become a Studio J member for access to JPG files of each layout you order. You’ll receive a web-ready version ready to send through cyberspace as well as a high-resolution, printable copy of your layout you can use to back up your printed version in case anything ever happens to it.

Paper or digital? Why choose? With Studio J, you get the best of both worlds. Enter Studio J now to find out how easy it is to get your memories out of the computer folder and into your albums.
